The countryside

Hills that turn brown.

In the middle of Bohol, more than a thousand grassy limestone mounds rise out of the farmland around Carmen. In the dry season the grass turns brown, and the hills earn their name. In 1997 the Philippine government declared them a Natural Monument.

A countryside tour strings them together with the rest of inland Bohol: the tarsiers in the forest at Corella, the jade-green Loboc River, the mahogany of the man-made forest and the old stone churches of the coast. A local guide and driver handle the road, the tickets and the timing.

  • Panglao to the Chocolate Hills: about 1.5 hours by road
  • Cebu to Tagbilaran: about 2 hours by fast ferry

The guide

The Bohol countryside, explained

Five or six stops, two hours of driving and one river lunch. Here is how the day fits together.

Why a tour

The sights of inland Bohol are spread over an hour or more of country road from Panglao, and each has its own ticket booth. A countryside tour puts them in one loop: the van picks you up, the guide or driver buys the tickets and keeps the timing, and you get the hills, the tarsiers and the river without planning a single leg.

Guests mention the guides most. "A great way to get a taste of Bohol", one wrote after the day from Panglao. The most-booked tour takes about seven hours with pickup.

What you pay on the day

Most shared tours list the entrance and environmental fees separately, about ₱500 per person in cash, and offer the Loboc River cruise lunch as an option at about ₱1,200, per the listings. Some tours put both in the price, and the day tours from Cebu also include the ferry. Each tour page here says which.

Prefer one number? The tour with the Loboc River lunch and the private tour include the main entrance fees.

Short on time? From Cebu, the day tour with the ferry fits the whole loop into one long day.

The tarsiers

The Philippine tarsier is one of the smallest primates, with eyes larger than its brain. The Philippine Tarsier Foundation's sanctuary in Corella lets visitors walk a short forest trail where guides point out tarsiers asleep in the branches. Keep quiet, use no flash and never touch them.

The Loboc River

Floating restaurants cruise the jade-green river with a buffet and live music, turning back at small falls. Riverside restaurants are the cheaper choice if you skip the cruise. Either way, lunch sits halfway through the day.

FAQ

Questions before you book

Straight answers to what people ask most about the tours, the fees and the stops.

How much does a Bohol countryside tour cost?

On GetYourGuide shared countryside tours start from about $26 per person. Most listings add the entrance and environmental fees, about ₱500 per person paid in pesos on the day, and the Loboc River cruise lunch, about ₱1,200. Tours with fees and lunch included start from about $64, and full days from Cebu from about $145. See what the day costs in 2026.

What is the usual itinerary for a Bohol countryside tour?

Most days loop through the island's centre: the Blood Compact shrine or Baclayon Church, the tarsiers, lunch on the Loboc River, the man-made forest and the Chocolate Hills, often with a hanging bridge or butterfly stop. The order changes with the operator. The itinerary guide shows a full day stop by stop.

How long is a Bohol countryside tour?

About 6 to 10 hours from Panglao or Tagbilaran, depending on the stops and the lunch, and about 14 hours from Cebu with the ferry both ways.

How many days in Bohol is enough?

Three or four days suit most visitors: one for the countryside tour, one for dolphins and island hopping off Panglao, and the rest for the beach or Anda in the east. Two days fit the countryside and one boat trip.

What are the top tourist spots in Bohol?

The Chocolate Hills in Carmen, the tarsier sanctuary in Corella, the Loboc River, Baclayon Church, the Bilar man-made forest, Alona Beach on Panglao and Balicasag Island for snorkelling. A countryside tour covers the first five in one day.

What month is best to go to Bohol?

December to May is the dry season in the Philippines, and March to May usually brings the calmest seas. June to November is wetter, and typhoons are possible late in the year. Countryside tours run all year; read the best time to visit Bohol.

Can I do the Bohol countryside tour from Cebu?

Yes. Day tours from Cebu City include the fast ferry, about two hours each way, plus the countryside stops and a Loboc River lunch, so expect a 14-hour day. More in Bohol from Cebu.

Can I go island hopping in Bohol?

Yes. Boats leave Panglao at dawn to watch dolphins near Pamilacan, then stop at Balicasag Island to snorkel with sea turtles. Virgin Island reopened in February 2026 under new visitor rules. Many travellers pair one sea day with one countryside day.

Can you touch or photograph the tarsiers?

You can photograph them, but without flash. The Philippine Tarsier Foundation asks visitors not to touch or feed them and to keep quiet, since tarsiers are nocturnal and stress easily. Read the tarsier sanctuary guide.

Why are they called the Chocolate Hills?

The grass on the 1,776 cone-shaped limestone hills turns brown in the dry season. The hills were declared a Natural Monument in 1997, and the main viewing deck in Carmen is 214 steps up. More in the Chocolate Hills guide.

Where is the best place to stay in Bohol?

Panglao, around Alona Beach, is the usual base: most countryside tours pick up there. Tagbilaran is handy for the ferry, and Anda on the east coast is quieter but about two and a half hours away.

Is Bohol safe for tourists?

The US, UK and Canadian travel advisories for the Philippines do not single out Bohol; their stronger warnings cover parts of Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. Normal precautions apply, and the countryside tours run with licensed operators.
